chrome-devtools-mcp take_screenshot accepts size and format caps

Introduced 2026-06-18 · score 0.98

HOW TO USE IT

When screenshots make MCP responses too large or exceed image dimension limits, start `chrome-devtools-mcp` with the needed screenshot caps; `take_screenshot` then uses them when the caller omits its own format or quality.

npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@1.3.0 --screenshot-format=webp --screenshot-quality=80 --screenshot-max-width=2000 --screenshot-max-height=2000

WHY THIS HELPS

When captures inflate MCP response payloads or exceed the consuming API's image dimension limits, configure screenshot format, quality, and size caps.

REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS

  • Version: 1.3.0
  • --screenshot-format: Output format: `jpeg`, `png`, or `webp`; unset preserves the `png` default.
  • --screenshot-quality: Compression quality 0–100 for JPEG and WebP; ignored for PNG. Unset preserves the Puppeteer default.
  • --screenshot-max-width: Maximum screenshot width in pixels; wider captures are downscaled with aspect ratio preserved. Unset means no resize.
  • --screenshot-max-height: Maximum screenshot height in pixels; taller captures are downscaled with aspect ratio preserved. Can be combined with max-width; the smaller scale factor wins. Unset means no resize.
  • Prerequisite: Node.js LTS, Chrome current stable or newer, and npm are listed as requirements.
  • All flags are opt-in.
  • Unset format preserves the existing `png` default.
  • Unset quality preserves the Puppeteer default; quality applies to JPEG and WebP and is ignored for PNG.
  • Unset width or height means no resize.
  • Downscaling preserves aspect ratio; when width and height caps are combined, the smaller scale factor wins.
