HOW TO USE IT
For a Compute Engine instance backup, restore one disk with `gcloud backup-dr backups restore disk`, specifying the boot-disk selector or the source data disk’s device name.
gcloud backup-dr backups restore disk <COMPUTE_INSTANCE_BACKUP_NAME> --name=<DISK_NAME> --target-project=<TARGET_PROJECT_NAME> [--source-instance-boot-disk | --source-instance-disk-device-name=<SOURCE_DISK_DEVICE_NAME>] [--target-zone=<TARGET_ZONE_NAME> | --target-region=<TARGET_REGION_NAME> --replica-zones=<ZONE_NAME>] [DISK_OVERRIDE_FLAGS...] [--async]WHY THIS HELPS
Restore an individual disk from a Compute Engine instance backup.
REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS
- COMPUTE_INSTANCE_BACKUP_NAME (required): Name of the Compute Engine instance backup to restore from.
- --name (required): Name of the restored disk.
- --target-project (required): Project where the disk is restored.
- --source-instance-boot-disk: Selects the source instance boot disk. The restore guide presents this and the device-name flag as alternatives.
- --source-instance-disk-device-name: Selects a source data disk by its device name. The restore guide presents this and the boot-disk flag as alternatives.
- --target-zone: Zone where a zonal disk is restored; mutually exclusive with --target-region.
- --target-region: Region where a regional disk is restored; mutually exclusive with --target-zone.
- --replica-zones: Replica zone for a regional disk restore.
- [--source-instance-boot-disk | --source-instance-disk-device-name=...]: The guide documents these selectors as alternatives; it does not explicitly state whether one is required.
- The source is a Compute Engine instance backup.
- Docs conflict: The gcloud restore-disk reference last updated 2026-05-27 does not list the two source-instance flags in its syntax; the restore guide and release note document them later.
