gh skill discovers and installs skills for agent hosts

Introduced 2026-04-16 · score 0.95

HOW TO USE IT

When installing a repository skill for your coding host, preview it first, then run `gh skill install <OWNER>/<REPOSITORY> <SKILL> --agent <HOST> --scope <project|user>`. Search for candidates with `gh skill search <QUERY>`; skill commands are documented as preview features.

gh skill search mcp-apps
gh skill preview <OWNER>/<REPOSITORY> <SKILL>
gh skill install <OWNER>/<REPOSITORY> <SKILL> --agent <HOST> --scope <project|user>

WHY THIS HELPS

Install a repository skill for the agent host used by the coding workflow.

REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS

  • Version: v2.90.0 or later
  • Availability: Public preview; subject to change without notice.
  • <QUERY> (required): Keyword to match against skill names or descriptions.
  • <OWNER>/<REPOSITORY> (required): Repository containing the skill.
  • <SKILL>: Skill name, namespaced name, or exact repository path. Omit to browse/select interactively; in non-interactive use, omit only with `--all`.
  • --agent <HOST>: Target host. Current docs list `github-copilot`, `claude-code`, `cursor`, `codex`, `gemini-cli`, `antigravity`, and others.
  • --scope <project|user>: Installation scope; defaults to `project`. Allowed values are `project` and `user`.
  • Prerequisite: The manual labels skill commands as preview features, subject to change without notice.
  • Prerequisite: The release note says GitHub CLI v2.90.0 or later is required.
  • Skills are not verified by GitHub and may contain prompt injections, hidden instructions, or malicious scripts; inspect contents before installation.
  • Docs conflict: Current manual lists `gemini-cli` as the `--agent` value; the release note’s example uses `gemini`. Do not treat those values as interchangeable without version-specific documentation.
