pulumi import supports structured JSON output

Introduced 2026-05-14 · score 0.96

HOW TO USE IT

When importing an existing resource and you need a programmatically consumable result, run `pulumi import` with `--output json` and the resource’s type token, name, and ID. The JSON output summarizes the operation result.

pulumi import <type-token> <name> <id> --output json

WHY THIS HELPS

When importing resources and consuming the result programmatically, request a structured JSON summary.

REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS

  • Version: v3.239.0
  • <type-token> (required): Pulumi resource type token; find it in the resource’s Import documentation.
  • <name> (required): Name to assign to the imported resource.
  • <id> (required): Cloud provider resource identifier used to look up the resource.
  • --output json (required): For this task, requests the structured JSON summary of the import operation result.
  • Prerequisite: Run the command for an existing Pulumi stack; the CLI imports resources into that stack.
  • Docs conflict: The current Pulumi CLI reference is generated for v3.270.0 and documents `-j, --json` for JSON output, rather than the release note’s `--output json` syntax. This newer-version documentation does not establish the flag spelling for v3.239.0.
