vercel vcr adds local-engine container image build and push
Introduced 2026-07-28 · score 0.95
HOW TO USE IT
For a linked Vercel project, build and push its container image with `vercel vcr build <engine> <context> <repository>:<tag> --push`; the release note says repository and tag default to the project name and `latest`, and engine arguments after `--` are forwarded. `vercel vcr push` pushes an existing image; combined build and push uses zstd by default as described in the release note.
vercel vcr build docker . <repository>:<tag> --pushvercel vcr build docker . <repository>:<tag> --push -- <engine-arguments>vercel vcr push <engine> <image-reference>WHY THIS HELPS
Build and push a container image to the Vercel Container Registry for a repository project.
BEFORE THIS CHANGE
Build and tag with the engine, then authenticate to `vcr.vercel.com` and push the full registry reference with the engine, for example `docker build -t vcr.vercel.com/<team>/<project>/<repository>:<tag> .` followed by `docker push vcr.vercel.com/<team>/<project>/<repository>:<tag>`.
REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS
- Version: 58.1.0
- engine (required): Local container engine: Docker, Podman, or Buildah. Documented Vercel example uses `docker`.
- context (required): Build context; documented Vercel example uses `.`.
- repository:tag: Image repository and tag; release note says defaults are project name and `latest`.
- --push: Build and push in one step.
- -- <engine-arguments>: Arguments after `--` are forwarded to the local engine.
- Prerequisite: Install Vercel CLI and authenticate with `vercel login`; link the local directory to the target Vercel project with `vercel link`.
- Prerequisite: Have access to the target project and the chosen local container engine installed and running. The official Vercel example uses Docker.
- The default repository is the project name and the default tag is `latest`.
- `vcr build --push` uses zstd by default with Docker via Buildx and Podman/Buildah on push.
- Standalone `vcr push` compresses with zstd on Podman and Buildah.
